Patrol Officer
BASIC FUNCTION:
Enforces Village ordinances, Illinois State law, and
federal law to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the community.
Provides community service through crime prevention, emergency response, ensures traffic
safety and responds to miscellaneous requests for assistance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND
EXERCISED:
Receives supervision from the Patrol Sergeant. Exercises no
direct supervision of staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not
limited to the following:
 | Patrols an assigned area in the Village, watching for
criminal and suspicious activity, verifying the safety of lives and property and prevents
crime by maintaining high visibility on the streets. |
 | Responds to dispatched calls for service, including alarm
activations, Fire Department assists, premise exams, motorist assists, and provides police
assistance as appropriate. |
 | Provides clear, concise, and accurate written reports as
required. |
 | Enforces traffic and parking regulations, writes appropriate
citations as necessary, and assists with traffic control and efficient flow of traffic
through Village streets. |
 | Arrests subjects when observed violating laws or Village
ordinances, or when probable cause exists that the person committed a crime, or when
warrants exist for known criminals. |
 | Testifies in court concerning circumstances related to
investigations, arrests, or citations. |
 | Seeks, recovers, and protects evidence at crime and accident
scenes, including photographing the accident or crime scene, diagramming or charting where
evidence was located, and recovering and safeguarding fingerprints. |
 | Investigates reported criminal offenses, including crime
scene investigation and field interrogation of witnesses and suspicious persons. |
 | Interviews criminal suspects to obtain information about
alleged criminal actions while adhering to laws and procedures necessary so that
information gathered withstands court scrutiny. |
 | Investigates and reports obstructions or hazards on streets,
sidewalks, or other public properties that might constitute a danger to public health or
safety. |
 | Counsels citizens as appropriate on topics such as crime
prevention, personal safety, and consequences of a continued pattern of inappropriate
behavior. |
 | Renders first aid in cases of emergency, where officer is
first to respond, until relieved by appropriate fire department emergency personnel. |
 | Documents and reports any required maintenance or repair of
assigned vehicle(s) and equipment. |
 | Attends daily roll call and other meetings as required. |
