Patrol Sergeant

BASIC FUNCTION:

Supervises and assigned staff of patrol officers to ensure such officers are properly trained and equipped for duty, that minimum staffing levels are maintained, and that officer response to calls for service is appropriate and lawful.

Enforces Village ordinances, Illinois State law, and federal law to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the community. Provides community service through crime prevention, emergency response, ensures traffic safety and responds to miscellaneous requests for assistance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives supervision from the Command Sergeant. Directly supervises the Department Patrol Officers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Supervises patrol officers in the enforcement of all applicable state and federal laws and Village ordinances, rules and regulations.
Assists officers in the arrest of suspects, handling or complex or problem situations, and reparation of incident reports.
Reviews and approves reports prepared by subordinate officers to ensure maintenance of accurate and appropriate records and reports.
Prepares work schedules and assigns, coordinates, and relieves the activities of shift personnel.
Evaluates assigned staff performance and appropriately recognizes commendable performance, whether observed or reported by a third party, and documents and counsels employees on opportunities to improve performance and recommends disciplinary action as appropriate.
Performs essential functions of Command Sergeant as required during the absence of the Command Sergeant.
Prepares and assists officers in the preparation of statements, exhibits, reports, and other pertinent information of an evidentiary nature for use in formal adjudication of cases in court.
Presents testimony in court regarding evidence obtained through official investigation.
Recommends training needs for subordinates.
Patrols an assigned area in the Village, watching for criminal and suspicious activity, verifying the safety of lives and property and prevents crime by maintaining high visibility on the streets.
Performs the same duties as outlined for Patrol Officers as required.
